Beauty and Functionality with Double Hung Windows

Double hung windows are a timeless choice for homes and have been a popular choice for centuries.  While they offer a classic look, these windows are chock full of practical benefits like energy efficiency and low maintenance.  They are a great option for homeowners looking to prioritize both looks and function for their replacement windows.

What is a double hung window?

Choosing the right type of window is important for the overall look and function of your home. And double hung windows are a great option for just about every architectural design. These traditional windows were originally used in European buildings and were brought to America by early settlers.  While they have evolved over time, they have become a staple in modern American architecture and remain quite popular today.

Mechanically, they have two sashes that move up and down within the frame.  This helps provide better air flow and ventilation.  This is due to their design. Which allows for air to flow in through the lower sash and out through the upper sash.  This can help indoor air quality and reduce the need for air conditioning.  The sashes may also include the option for tilting inward to make cleaning a breeze.

One of the key features of double hung windows is their versatility in design and style.  They come in a variety of materials and finishes, including wood, vinyl, and fiberglass.  They can also be customized to fit your specific needs and preferences.

The unique design of these timeless windows makes them a great aesthetic solution for homes of all types. And the perfect practical solution for homeowners who value ease of use and maintenance.

What is the difference between a single hung window and a double hung window?

When it comes to choosing between single hung and double hung windows, there are a few factors to think about.  While both windows have their advantages and disadvantages. There are several reasons why double hung windows may be the better solution for your needs.

One of the main advantages of double hung windows is their ability to provide better ventilation and air flow.  This is due to that design which allows for air to flow in through the lower sash and out through the upper sash.  If you only want partial ventilation, you can simply open just one of the sashes.

In contrast, single hung windows only allow for ventilation through the lower sash. Which can limit the amount of air flow and lead to a stuffy, uncomfortable environment.  This is critical during those sweltering Florida summers where proper ventilation can make the difference between an overworked air conditioner and one that you can rely on when the heat is just too much.

Another plus for the double hung window is their ease of use and maintenance.  Both sashes can be moved up and down within the frame, making it easy to control.  Also, the added bonus of tilting sashes is the cherry on top.  Inward tilting sashes make cleaning your windows less of a chore. And helps you stay motivated to keep them looking their best.  This is particularly helpful for windows that are difficult to reach from the outside.

On the other hand, single hung windows, can be more difficult to clean due to their design.  With only the lower sash being movable, cleaning the exterior of the upper sash can be a challenging and time-consuming chore.

Energy efficiency is another factor to consider when choosing between single and double hung windows.  Double hung windows are more energy efficient than single hung windows due to their ability to provide better ventilation.  Better ventilation happens with cooler air entering your home through the lower sash and warm air exiting through the upper sash.   This will help you reduce energy bills and save you money.

Double hung windows also tend to be more pleasing to the eye.  The look of a double hung window is more symmetrical.  Both the top sash and bottom sash have the same proportions. Single hung windows, however, have a tendency to look smaller on top.

While both single hung and double hung windows have their advantages and disadvantages, double hung windows offer more benefits that make them the better option.  If you are in the market for new windows, double hung windows from Mister Window are definitely worth considering.

Why choose double hung windows

As homeowners in Florida prepare their homes to either sell or upgrade for hurricane season, one option that comes in top of the list is upgrading or replacing your double hung windows.  Here are some reasons why you should consider this type of window for your replacement windows:

  1. Feature a classic rectangular shape: The classic rectangular shape of double hung windows is a popular and timeless choice for homeowners.  The shape is aesthetically pleasing, not only for homeowners but also your guests and neighbors. And also provides many practical benefits.  The rectangular chape allows for more natural light to enter the home. Helping to brighten up dark rooms and improve the overall atmosphere in the home.  This shape is so versatile. And will fit into almost any architectural style and is ideal for those who prefer a classic look for their home.
  2. Sashes that move up and down: Having two sashes that are able to move is a great option.  First, it helps promote superior ventilation.  Opening both the top and bottom sashes creates a natural air flow through the home, an option that is at the top of the list for Floridians during the summer.  They are also easy to operate.  Unlike other types of windows that require a lot of effort to open and close, the double moving sashes are designed to be user-friendly.  They open simply with a push or pull. And are great for people who may have mobility issues or other physical challenges. Being able to move the upper sash and the lower sash is an option that many parents or pet owners may not consider.  You can leave the top sash open and let the air flow through the house while maintaining a safe and secure environment for all of your critters.
  3. Pair well with just about any style of home: Double hung windows are versatile and timeless window styles that will work with just about any style of home.  Whether you have a traditional, colonial, Victorian, or contemporary home, double hung windows can enhance the architectural features of your home with adding value.  Their versatility comes from their classic and simple rectangular shape.  They can be customized with different frame materials, colors, and hardware options that will work with your personal taste and style preferences.
  4. Functionality – Versatility when it comes to ventilation: One of the key advantages of double hung windows is their functionality and versatility when it comes to ventilation.  Having two sashes that move independently allows double hung windows to provide excellent airflow and ventilation control.  You can opt to open the top sash only, the bottom sash only, or go wild for top notch air flow by opening both sashes at the same time.  This gives you control over how much ventilation you want.  The ability to control ventilation inside your home is important for staying comfortable.  Proper ventilation will also help prevent a buildup of moisture and reduce mold which can exacerbate breathing problems and cause other health issues.
  5. Easier to clean: Beyond architectural versatility and winning in the ventilation category, double hung windows are also incredibly easy to clean and maintain.  Unlike other window styles, double hung windows are designed with easy maintenance in mind.  One of the most innovative benefits of double hung windows is their ability to tilt inwards.  This makes for easier cleaning of both interior and exterior surfaces and is a real advantage when it comes to cleaning upper-level windows that would otherwise be difficult to clean.  This eliminates the need for ladders or other equipment and makes it a safer and more convenient option.  Double hung windows are also made from more durable materials that require less maintenance.  Frames are typically made from high-quality materials like vinyl, wood or fiberglass that are designed to withstand weather, corrosion, and rot, saving tons of money on maintenance and repairs.  Not only do double hung windows look great, but they also make your life easier! How do double hung windows work?

Double hung windows are a common window type in Florida. With two sashes that slide up and don independently of each other.  These windows consist of those two sashes, a frame, and hardware that allows the sashes to move.  The frame is the outermost portion of the window and is anchored to the wall.  This provides structural support and holds the sashes in place.  The sashes are the sliding parts.  There is an upper sash which sits above the lower sash.  The hardware consists of a balance system that counterbalances the weight of the sashes and a lock or latch that secures the window when it is closed.

Increased ventilation is achieved through the movement of the two sashes.  In order to open a double hung window, the lower sash is lifted upward by pulling on the lower rail of the sash.  The lower rail of the sash is the horizontal part of the frame that runs along the bottom of the sash.  As the lower sash is raised, the upper sash remains in place and is held in position by the frame.  Closing the lower sash is simple as well.  The bottom sash is lowered back down until it is flush with the frame and can then be locked or latched.

In order to open the upper sash, the lower sash must first be lifted upward.  Once the lower sash is raised, the upper sash can be released from the frame by unlocking the hardware.  Then the upper sash can be lowered down, partially or completely.  When the upper sash is lowered, the lower sash remains in place, held in position by the frame.  Maximum ventilation occurs when both sashes are open.

The counterbalance system is the critical part in making double hung windows work.  There are two types of balance systems commonly used for double hung windows:  spring balances and block-and-tackle balances.  Spring balances use a spring mechanism that attaches to the sash, as the sash goes up and down, the spring compresses or expands, providing the necessary counterbalance.  Block-and-tackle balances use a series of pulleys and cords to counterbalance the sashes.  When the sashes move up and down, the cords move through the pulleys, again creating the proper counterbalance.
